Take part in our peaceful struggle
for LGBTIQ equality in Lebanon Helem is a non-profit organization based in Lebanon and registered in Quebec (Canada) as of 11 February 2004. Helem has been working in Lebanon on various human rights issues in general and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues in specific. A wide range of activities: Our activities have included social and cultural events which bring the gay community together, extensive work on HIV/AIDS related issues, advocacy for prosecuted LGBT individuals and lobbying with other human rights organizations for the advancements of human rights and personal freedoms in Lebanon. Helem has been also fighting homophobia by promoting LGBT visibility in the press, in human rights and public health NGO communities as well as in the cultural scene. Furthermore, Helem is just starting to establish a much needed link between Lebanon and Lebanese emigrants worldwide. A crime with no victims... and a pledge: The Lebanese law punishes "unnatural sexual intercourse", interpreted as homosexual acts, with up to 1 year of prison (Penal code article 534)... a jail term for a crime without any victims. Every year, tens of Lebanese gay and lesbian individuals are arrested by the Lebanese police for practicing "unnatural sex". Thousands more live in daily fear. They are subjected to family pressure, social discrimination and legal prosecution. We, at Helem, are committed on assisting LGBT individuals and steering the community to safety. We plan to use your donations to: equip a community center for LGBTs in Beirut, expand the website, launch legal and health awareness activities and hire a full-time community center director as well as a full-time LGBT rights campaigner.
