Supporting the Model Defense of Article 534

Back

Introduction

Over the past decade, the role of the judiciary in protecting minority rights in Lebanon has become a key topic of public discourse, especially regarding LGBTQ individuals. Despite Article 534 of the Lebanese Penal Code criminalizing same-sex relations, advocacy efforts, particularly from Helem, have challenged these laws. This report explores how international human rights frameworks and legal strategies from countries like India, Nepal, Botswana, and Kenya have informed efforts to decriminalize same-sex relations in Lebanon. It aims to provide insights and strategies to support the removal of Article 534 from Lebanon’s legal system.
